Interwoven: Wool Across Borders September 22nd 2025

Spinning Workshop at the Garden Museum

In April 2025 we had the pleasure of hosting a workshop at The Garden Museum in London. Led by expert spinner, Asha Buch, The Art of Hand-Spinning was an interactive workshop where Asha shared the craft of spinning on a peti-charkha (traditional portable spinning wheel) as a gentle act of resistance.

Fully booked with 30 curious participants across all ages and generations, the workshop sparked lively conversations and filled the museum foyer with the soothing hum of spinning. Asha not only demonstrated the technique but also reflected on its rich history and power as a mindful, radical practice.

Regenerating Fashion?

Hosted by Instituto Marangoni in February 2024, the Regenerating Fashion?  symposium asked how might fashion transition to become a benign system that supports human and environmental wellbeing? How might fashion contribute to a better world? What are the values, systems and processes required to promote life? How might fashion embody these? 

Khadi London director, Jo Salter, was invited to speak about her decade-long experience in ethical fashion and textiles, and discuss how we can build transparency,  collaboration and alternative business models into global value chains.

Threads of Change

Located within the prestigious Nehru Centre in London, Khadi London's Threads of Change conference and exhibition emerges as a transformative progression from the renowned Festival of Natural Fibres.

Throughout its immersive week-long duration, Threads of Change convenes leading industry practitioners and experts for dynamic panel discussions and captivating craft demonstrations curated around the themes of Climate Change and Social Justice, Responsible Business and Co-creation, Education, Heritage and Culture, and Inclusive Eco-Systems.

Seamlessly aligned with the core themes of the conference, an accompanying exhibition featuring selected natural fibre works from across Europe and India served as a visual testament to the power of innovation and tradition in fostering positive change.  

Regenerative Fashion Day

Safia Minney, MBE of Fashion Declares launched its first Regenerative Fashion Day, taking place during London Fashion Week on 14th September. 

The conference brought together sustainable fashion experts to put nature and regeneration firmly on the fashion agenda. It comprised of panel events featuring  designers, buyers, sustainability practitioners and marketing professionals to put the spotlight on initiatives and individuals paving new pathways in the fashion industry, illustrating that a renewable and regenerative future for fashion is both economically feasible and creatively exciting.

Khadi London was invited to curate a display of ethically-produced textiles and art works across the conference venue of The Ethical Society's, Conway Hall.

Festival of Natural Fibres

Organised by Khadi London, Freeweaver SAORI Studio and OneHutFull between 2018-2022, The Festival of Natural Fibres aimed to create a welcoming space for all those enthusiastic, entranced, or simply curious about natural fibres. Hosted at Craft Central, each festival brought together a community of farmers, researchers, designers, makers, activists and entrepreneurs to present panel discussions, screenings, craft workshops, stalls and an exhibition. The festival acted as a gentle call to action: to learn about natural fibres such as hemp, nettle, flax, wool and cotton, engage in open discussions, discover traditional craft processes, plant seeds for potential collaborations, and directly experience the wondrous potential of natural fibres.

Jaipur Khadi Conference

In January 2020 The Government of Rajasthan, India hosted a conference in Jaipur called 'Globalization of Khadi'.  Attendees from craft clusters, global business and fashion design engaged in presentations and networking, exploring the key areas to be addressed as part of a programme to globalise khadi textiles.  Khadi London's Jo Salter, Asha Buch and Laurence Sewell all presented to the audience during the event and enjoyed many discussions with contacts old and new who had travelled from throughout India as well as from further afield.

Awa:ek

Awa:ek (A way ahead: ethical khadi) was a collaborative conference organised by The Khadi Initiative (Action Village India, Moralfibre Fabrics, Khadi CIC, Where Does It Come From?, and, Fresh Eyes – People to People Travel CIC).  The Day long conference took place at London's Fashion and Textile Museum on November 24th 2017 and included presentations from key industry professionals from UK and India.  During the afternoon a number of break out discussion groups took place to plan out future actions and events.  Students from UCL (University College London) created a video of the event. 

A follow up event, Awa:ek 2, took place the following year in Ahmedabad, India hosted by Moralfibre Fabrics.
